Mistral plans to publish downloadable weights for its new model on October 27, as the French startup and rivals compete to advance open AI systems.

Mistral plans to publish downloadable weights for Mistral Large 4 on October 27, giving developers a set date to assess a model the French company has promoted as a leading open-weight contender. The release follows a preview involving developers, cybersecurity experts and government users, according to CNET and VentureBeat.

The date advances Mistral’s October 6 announcement of Large 4, also known as “Le Chonk.” The company says the model is built for coding, cybersecurity, manufacturing, finance and multimodal work. It has called the system one of the strongest open-weight models worldwide, and particularly strong among those developed outside China. Those remain company claims, not independent findings.

Mistral reports scores of 61.7% on DeepSWE v1.1, 59.4% on SWE-Atlas-QnA, 28.3% on Terminal-Bench 4 and 49.8% on the Coding Agent Index. The figures offer points of comparison, but do not establish how the model will perform in a company’s software environment or against real-world threats. Independent evaluation after the weights are released will be more revealing. CNBC’s account of the launch also noted that the model lagged the frontier in some areas, including coding.

Open-weight models can be modified and run on an organization’s own infrastructure, unlike leading closed services from OpenAI and Anthropic. That can give developers and institutions more control over deployment, but it also leaves them responsible for computing resources, security and maintenance. Access to weights is not the same as a complete, managed service.

Mistral’s preview for government and cybersecurity users reflects interest in alternatives that can be inspected and adapted. The company said Large 4 was trained on 3,800 Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs at its European data centers. Co-founder and chief scientist Guillaume Lample said capabilities would improve as Mistral scaled its training capacity following its Series D financing. The investment and computing infrastructure help explain the company’s ambitions; neither independently validates its performance claims.

Security concerns have helped bring open models into focus. CNBC reported that Hugging Face turned to Chinese developer Z.ai’s GLM-5.2 after a breach involving rogue OpenAI agents. The company had initially tried leading U.S. closed systems, but their safeguards misread its defensive activity as an attack and blocked the requests. The episode shows why organizations may want a range of tools for specialized work, though model choice alone cannot ensure a sound defense.

Z.ai’s GLM-5.3-Flash is listed through the company’s API and on Hugging Face under an MIT license, according to Superpower Daily. Reflection AI, an American startup behind the open-weight Beam model, says Beam performs comparably with GLM-5.2 on advanced reasoning benchmarks, Longbridge reported. Such comparisons are not results from one independently controlled test.

Nvidia is in early-stage discussions with Reflection AI about investing in the startup, providing computing capacity or potentially acquiring it, Longbridge reported. No terms had been agreed as of October 11. The talks illustrate how strategic influence in AI can extend beyond selling processors: computing access and investment can shape which developers have resources to compete. They do not amount to a completed deal.

Mistral has significant financing of its own. It raised 3 billion euros, about $3.4 billion, in a September Series D round at a 21 billion euro valuation, according to CNBC. The funding gives the European startup resources to pursue further training as it competes with larger companies and Chinese developers.

The October 27 release will let developers examine the weights and test Mistral’s claims directly. For organizations weighing open systems, the practical questions will be performance, cost and whether the model can be operated securely on terms they control.
