Mining Giants Adopt Stratum V2 to Secure Digital Sovereignty

Major Bitcoin mining pools including Foundry and Antpool have joined the Stratum V2 Working Group, signaling a technical shift toward decentralized block construction and enhanced cryptographic security.

The technical architecture of the global Bitcoin network is undergoing its most significant structural shift in over a decade. On May 7, 2026, a coalition of the world’s largest mining pools—including Foundry, Antpool, and F2pool—formally joined the Stratum V2 Working Group. This move represents a decisive pivot away from the aging Stratum V1 protocol, which has governed the industry since 2012 but has increasingly become a bottleneck for both security and decentralization.

Stratum V1 was never designed as a formal cryptographic standard. Developed by Marek “Slush” Palatinus, the legacy protocol operated in plaintext, leaving miners vulnerable to hashrate hijacking and surveillance. Critically, V1 forced miners to accept block templates pre-selected by centralized pool operators. The new Stratum V2 framework addresses these vulnerabilities through end-to-end authenticated encryption and a binary format that slashes bandwidth requirements by 60% for pools and 70% for individual miners.

From a sovereignty perspective, the most critical advancement is the Job Declaration sub-protocol. This feature enables individual miners to construct their own block templates rather than blindly processing transactions assigned by a central authority. By returning transaction selection to the periphery of the network, the protocol mitigates the risk of censorship and reduces the influence of the five major pools that currently control approximately 70% of global hashpower. This shift ensures that the power to validate transactions remains distributed, upholding the core promise of a peer-to-peer financial system.

Industry leaders are framing the transition as a necessity for long-term network resilience. Antpool CEO Andy Zhou stated that the company is supporting the adoption to foster an open, interoperable standard that prioritizes efficiency and decentralization. Similarly, Spiderpool CTO Kenway Wang noted that the protocol’s ability to support miner-constructed templates is particularly vital for operators in bandwidth-constrained environments, ensuring that American and global miners can operate independently of local infrastructure limitations.

While the Working Group was founded in 2022 by Braiins and Spiral, the 2026 expansion marks a new phase of institutional deployment. Production environments are already active; DMND launched full miner-selected templates in 2025, and Braiins Pool currently utilizes the protocol to capture higher fee efficiency. Real-world testing indicates that native V2 usage can increase profitability by up to 7.4% through lower latency and superior fee capture. For smaller operators, the barrier to entry remains low, as translation proxies allow legacy V1 firmware to connect to V2-enabled pools without requiring immediate hardware upgrades.

As the digital landscape becomes increasingly contested, the shift to Stratum V2 reinforces the foundational principles of the decentralized web. By hardening the communication layer between hardware and the network, the mining industry is taking proactive steps to protect individual liberties and constitutional values against the threats of centralized overreach and external interference. This engineering milestone proves that technical innovation remains the best defense for digital sovereignty.
