As of September 2, the Bundibugyo-strain outbreak has surged to 6,342 cases and 3,072 deaths, rapidly expanding from three to nearly 60 health zones across six provinces. The speed of transmission has alarmed international observers, particularly as the majority of new cases occur outside monitored contact networks, raising the specter of a regional pandemic risk that could eventually reach beyond African borders.
