Galaxy Digital has launched a $5 million initiative to fund post-quantum cryptographic research and protocol upgrades to secure Bitcoin against future computational threats.
Galaxy Digital announced the launch of the Galaxy Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative on July 21, 2026, committing up to $5 million to fortify the network against the theoretical long-term threat of quantum computing. The initiative arrives as the Trump administration navigates a volatile geopolitical landscape, including a naval blockade of Iran that has driven oil prices above $95 per barrel and a trade dispute with Canada involving the 1930 Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act. Against this backdrop of global instability, the push for digital sovereignty and protocol durability has taken on renewed urgency for institutional stakeholders.
The initiative is built upon three strategic pillars designed to coordinate the Bitcoin ecosystem’s transition to post-quantum cryptography. The first pillar is a developer grant program that is accepting applications immediately for work on quantum-resistant transaction proposals, signature schemes, and security audits for wallet migration tools. The second pillar involves an expanded research and publishing program through Galaxy Research, intended to educate policymakers and institutional investors on the technical requirements of cryptographic migration. Finally, a Quantum Advisory Council has been established to guide funding priorities, featuring specialists such as Barry Sanders from the University of Calgary and Eran Tromer from Boston University.
Technical focus is currently centered on two draft Bitcoin Improvement Proposals: BIP-360 and BIP-361. BIP-360 introduces a new address type, Pay-to-Merkle-Root, which is designed to prevent the exposure of public keys on-chain, a critical vulnerability in the face of quantum-scale Shor’s algorithm. BIP-361, authored by Jameson Lopp and several collaborators, outlines a more aggressive three-phase migration plan. Under this proposal, the network would begin rejecting payments to quantum-vulnerable addresses three years after activation. Five years post-activation, legacy ECDSA and Schnorr signatures would be fully invalidated, potentially freezing approximately 6.7 million BTC—roughly 34% of the total supply—unless holders move their assets to quantum-resistant outputs.
Galaxy Digital has framed this $5 million commitment as a call for co-funding, urging other Bitcoin-focused firms to contribute capital toward these essential infrastructure upgrades. The firm explicitly stated that while no quantum computer currently possesses the capability to break Bitcoin’s security, the accelerating warning cycle regarding quantum timelines necessitates immediate preparedness. This proactive stance contrasts with the relatively slow engagement seen in other sectors of the digital asset industry. The initiative also explores zero-knowledge proof-based recovery paths for frozen coins, a complex area of decentralized engineering that remains a point of contention among developers.
While the Galaxy initiative focuses on the protocol layer, other infrastructure developments are shaping the broader digital landscape. T-Mobile was recently named the U.S. Mobile Network Test Champion for Q2 2026, and TIM Brasil has partnered with HCLTech to enable South America’s first cross-platform eSIM transfers. Additionally, DriveNets and AMD have published a reference architecture for AI clusters using AMD Instinct MI350 GPUs, highlighting the ongoing integration of high-performance computing and network fabric. These advancements, alongside the release of Kata Containers 4.0 with its new Rust-based runtime, underscore a broader trend toward hardware-level security and sandboxing for autonomous agents.
Despite the significant funding, BIP-360 and BIP-361 remain draft proposals without formal consensus-level commitments from Bitcoin Core maintainers or major ETF issuers. The path to activation requires broad agreement across a decentralized network of miners and node operators, a process historically characterized by rigorous debate. By providing the financial runway for this research, Galaxy Digital is attempting to ensure that when the technical necessity for a soft-fork arrives, the Bitcoin community will have a vetted, engineered solution ready for deployment, preserving American digital leadership in the face of evolving global technological threats.
